NEWS AND NOTICES

  • July 21 st, 2011   Several people representing Pinnacle Security Incorporated have been granted Pemberton Township Solicitors Permits. They have complied with our Township Ordinance and will now begin going door to door offering home security systems and contracts in our neighborhoods.

The granting of these types of permits does not imply endorsement by the police department or the Township of Pemberton. I encourage anyone who entertains any type of sales proposals to be educated consumers.
  • June 29th, 2011 - Dear Community Members,

The Country Lakes and Presidential Lakes sections of Browns Mills have been experiencing a rash of residential and automobile burglaries in recent weeks. Our Patrol and Investigative Divisions have made some arrests, but we would like your help with this problem. First, please keep your vehicles, residences, sheds, etc. locked. Many of these burglaries have been crimes of easy opportunity where there is no forced entry. Second, keep your valuables (especially those in vehicles) out of direct sight. Third, if you see suspicious people or vehicles in your neighborhood report them to us by calling our non-emergency number, 609-723-8300. We would especially like to hear about any strange people knocking on your door and making unusual requests. We would also like to be contacted if there is unusual activity around unoccupied homes in your area.

This is not a problem that is unique to Pemberton Township. Many towns are experiencing this type of burglary spree. The Pemberton Township Police Department is taking a pro-active approach to this situation and we need you to be additional eyes and ears for us. You know what is normal and more importantly “abnormal” in your neighborhoods. Don’t hesitate to call us using the non-emergency number that I provided. Of course, anytime you see a crime in progress or need immediate police assistance, call 911.

    Thank You,
    Chief David Jantas

  • May 25th, 2011 - Informational letter from Chief David Jantas - You have heard the phrase, "If it is too good to be true, it probably is." There are people out there that are trying to scam you out of your hard earned money. A potential victim of a scam recently came to me with not just one but two attempts at defrauding them. This person received scam letters in the mail on separate days. The scam works like this: you receive a letter along with an authentic looking check. The letter explains that you have won a sweepstakes and that you need to cash the check and send the scammer the tax money that is owed on your winnings. Shortly after you send that tax money they state that you owe, you will find that the check they sent you was not legitimate. "YOU" will be liable for the amount of the original check along with losing the supposed tax money that you sent to the scammer. In these tough economic times, no one can afford this.

There are dozens of very sophisticated scams out there. This is just one example. Do not be lured by the very authentic or official looking documents that you may receive. They may come by regular mail, the internet or by other means. You will be a victim and lose money. These scams are national and many times international in their scope. The letters sent to the potential victim that I mentioned were from Canada and England with no return addresses. The chances of local law enforcement bringing these criminals to justice are slim. The FBI, U.S. Secret Service and other federal agencies have entire task forces dedicated to addressing this problem. Again, do not be a victim.

If you receive something that you believe is a scam please report it to us. We will document the incident, investigate it to the greatest extent possible and report it to the proper agency. Most of all, be suspicious of any windfall of money that you are offered. It is probably too good to be true.
