  • Chief Robert Lewandowski has announced that the Pemberton Township Police Department has formed a new police unit. Its mission will be to work within the residential neighborhoods to lower crime and increase police visibility. The unit's primary functions will include street level crimes and investigation of other quality of life violations, to assist with crime prevention, community policing, training and narcotics enforcement. Officers will use foot patrol, bicycle patrol, as well as unmarked units to patrol the residential areas. Officers were selected for this unit based upon recommendations from their supervisors and command staff. "Sgt. David Geibel is the unit commander and he comes to this job as a dedicated, knowledgeable and resourceful leader. He will answer directly to Detective Lieutenant Ron Kreig. The three officers that comprise the rest of the unit are young, energetic and outstanding officers. Patrol Officer Dan Matthews has been on the department for six years and was part of the team of officers who went to New Orleans after the Hurricane.Katrina. Patrol Officers Mike Bennett and Mike Brewer have been with us for two years and have shown the ability, maturity and drive that we hope are indicative of all our officers" said Lewandowski.

"Keeping the residents safe and secure in their neighborhood is the foremost mission of a police department. Patrol officers are normally busy handling calls for service and we decided that we needed a group of officers that would be free from these duties to spend the time that is needed on specific issues that plague our neighborhoods" said Chief Lewandowski. "each neighborhood has its own specific needs and problems. These could be car break-ins, open air drug sales, noise complaints, traffic problems or a host of others. This unit will have the time and resources to work on them."

Lewandowski went on to say that the Safe Neighborhoods Unit will work closely with the Detective Division in gang and drug interdiction but will not lose sight of its main focus. "the residential areas of the township will see an increase in police patrols from not only this unit but from the patrol officers. This is one subject that is constantly brought to my attention by residents. They want police in the neighborhoods and they are going to get it."

  • The Pemberton Township Police has been awarded a grant from the New Jersey Department of Criminal Justice to purchase much needed soft body armor. Chief Robert Lewandowski stated that the grant comes at no cost to the taxpayers. These funds are a result of convictions obtained in court and come from surcharges on motor vehicle tickets and other criminal offenses. " The grant is for $6,375.58 and will cover the cost of 10 body vests for the officers. "Although they are referred to as bullet proof vests they are in actuality soft body armor and have a life span of about five years. Then each has to be replaced. This grant will allow us to replace the outdated vests worn by some officers and will cover the entire cost." The Chief went on to say that the department has also applied to the Federal Government program for vest replacement and will hear the results of that grant request sometime in the late spring. "If we can get additional funds we can upgrade vests for additional officers." The Pemberton Township Police Department has a budgeted complement of fifty nine police officers serving Pemberton Township.

MARCH

  • March 25th - A Browns Mills man is under arrest after being stopped by officers for a motor vehicle equipment violation where the officer found a substantial amount of marijuana in the vehicle.

Patrol Officer Thomas Stewart II was on patrol when he observed the 1997 tan Ford Explorer. Upon stopping the vehicle and speaking to the driver, 21 year old Christopher Slate of Magnolia Street in Browns Mills, Stewart detected an odor of raw marijuana emanating from the vehicle. Police Chief Robert Lewandowski had praise for the officer's actions. "The officer's initiative in this case took three (3) pounds of marijuana off the street and is another in the long line of drug arrests we have made in recent months. It's not just the detailed investigations that reveal drug dealing, it's also the aggressive officer patrolling the neighborhoods for things that are out of place". He went on to say that he will request that the courts seize the money and vehicle and turn them over to the township for their use. "Use a vehicle in committing a crime and we want it. Make money from criminal activity and we'll take it."

  • imageMarch 20th - A local man is in custody for robbery after police say he assaulted a person and snatched a gold chain from the victim's neck before fleeing. With information from local residents, police officers including the townships K-9 unit located the suspect hiding in a nearby home.

The incident began at 8:50 P.M. when the victim, Jerry Carter, 33, was walking on Kinsley Road in Sunbury Village. He was approached by an assailant who punched him in the head and snatched a gold chain from his neck before fleeing the scene. The victim identified the assailant as local resident Lamont Brown, 36, of Kinsley Road. Police officers from the Pemberton Township Safe Neighborhoods Unit, along with officers from the Patrol Division and K-9 Unit arrived to search for the suspect. Sgt. David Geibel of the Safe Neighborhood Unit was approached by several local residents who had information on the location of the suspect.

With this information officers set up a perimeter around the residence of 212 Kinsley Road. When approaching the home, the suspect attempted to flee out the rear door only to be confronted by officers positioned as rear security and ran back into the residence. After refusing numerous orders to surrender, K-9 Officer Justin Kreig deployed his K-9 partner Bandit into the home. Accompanied by Sgt. Dave Geibel, Ptl. Dan Matthews, Ptl. Jason Watters and Sgt. Dave Woodworth of Pemberton Boro P.D., officers entered the home where the K-9 located Brown hiding behind a furnace and hot water heater. Brown, still refusing to surrender, fought the officers and had to be physically restrained to complete the arrest. He was subsequently found to be in possession of narcotics and drug paraphernalia.

Brown was charged with Robbery, Resisting Arrest, Possession of Crack Cocaine and Narcotics Paraphernalia. He was lodged in Burlington County Jail on $25,000 bail. Note: Brown is a six (6) time convicted felon with numerous arrests and is a convicted sex offender. Chief Robert Lewandowski said that "this incident only strengthens the ties that are needed to rid the township of these types of crimes and those who commit them. Here we have a man who has shown little or no consideration for the residents in the very neighborhood in which he lives". Brown recently was released from jail within the past few weeks and still has pending robbery and weapons charges from other incidents. Chief Lewandowski added "It was the residents who are fed up with this type of activity who came forward with the information on where the suspect was hiding. Several residents thanked the officers for what they did here. It's really the residents who should be thanked! This is what is needed in Pemberton Township, a real partnership between police and the community."

K-9, Unit executed a search warrant in the Sunbury Village section of Pemberton Township Thursday night and netted a total of four (4) suspects and seized a quantity of narcotics and cash. This search warrant was the result of narcotics investigation in which the sale and purchase of Controlled Dangerous Substances were taking place. Officers made a traffic stop of the vehicle and arrested Mr. Sutton. Also arrested were two passengers in the vehicle, Cornell Sutton and Edward Sutton. Simultaneously, officers executed the search warrant at 190 Kinsley Road. Upon arrival, officers found seventeen (17) people occupying the small two bedroom home. Arrested at the home was Tiaisha Houston. Police recovered $2,816 in cash. A female juvenile found in the front yard was charged with underage drinking.

If the names seem familiar it is because Jermaine Sutton, Cornell Sutton and Tiaisha Sutton were targets of two simultaneous drug raids at the same location on March 1, 2008. Both Suttons had posted their bail and returned to Sunbury Village and their old way of life.

Police Chief Robert Lewandowski said "We will keep hammering away at those persons who are spoiling life for our residents. We will hit them and hit them until they decide that it's not worth it. We'll arrest them, take their cars, their money and anything they have. Then we will take their freedom hopefully for a long, long time." On March 7th at approximately 3 P.M. Pemberton Township Police were alerted by police dispatch to a 911 call for a subject who was reported to have left his residence and ran into the woods. Police were advised that the subject, a 31 year old male from Browns Mills, had possibly injured himself and was mentally unstable. Patrol units responded to the location and attempted to locate the subject but were unsuccessful at which time a perimeter was set up. The Pemberton Township Police K-9 Unit was contacted and K-9 Officer Justin Kreig and his K-9 partner, Bandit, responded from home to conduct a track. Upon receiving a brief of the situation Kreig deployed Bandit into the woods knowing that the combination of heavy rains, time lapse, and area contamination from previous searching were unfavorable conditions for a track to have positive results. The K-9 engaged the track leading Kreig through approximately a mile of paths in the woods from the starting point, then off into a dense area of woods where his partner alerted on the subject who was unharmed, attempting to conceal himself and taken into custody for his safety. The subject was subsequently transported to Lourdes Medical Center in Willingboro for evaluation and treatment.

imageOn March 4, 2008 the Pemberton Township Police Department arrested and charged Jason Mitchell, 50, of Browns Mills with fraud and theft. This arrest was the result of a lengthy investigation which revealed that Mitchell (operator of the Browns Mills Dream Car Club) advertised and scheduled annual car shows since June of 2003 while promoting that the proceeds raised by these events were to benefit the local and state D.A.R.E programs. D.A.R.E. Officer Christal Bartholomew became suspect of the operation when contacted by Mitchell requesting that the townships D.A.R.E. officer and vehicle participate in the September 2007 event which was being held in the Browns Mills Shopping Center parking lot, and Mitchell's responses to questions that were asked about his affiliation to D.A.R.E. Officer Bartholomew contacted D.A.R.E New Jersey Inc. and inquired about Mitchell. They reportedly were unaware of him or records of any funds raised and/or forwarded to the program. An investigation was launched and revealed that Mitchell was using the funds raised since 2003 for his own personal use and benefit not for the kids of the D.A.R.E. programs in this community or the state. The investigation is continuing in an effort to uncover the true dollar amount misappropriated which at this time exceeds $1,000.00 dollars. Mitchell was charged and released pending arraignment on Monday at Pemberton Township Municipal Court. Officer Christal Bartholomew and Detective Chris Mahler continue the investigation.

Through a special program they will donate two new all-terrain vehicles for the department to use. We have quite a lot of wooded and open areas that are not easily accessible by vehicle and a large problem with illegal off road activity. These machines will give us the ability to go anywhere and be everywhere."

According to Chief Bob Lewandowski most areas of the township are off limits to ATV operation. "The laws are clear; you must have specific permission from the landowner to operate an ATV. If you don-t know who owns the property or if you do not have permission, you must keep off." The department has been using special enforcement patrols in the high activity areas. This includes officers operating four wheel drive vehicles as well as the department-s motorcycles."

Lewandowski went on to say that there are certain areas in the township that are especially hard hit. Presidential Lakes and Country Lakes are at the top of the list. "You cannot operate any vehicle in the sand pits behind Presidential Lakes since it is township property. You cannot operate anywhere in the state forest lands either. The area behind Country Lakes is off limits. If you are found operating unlawfully within the township you will be charged with trespassing, ticketed and your vehicle will be impounded. You will have to pay a tow and storage fee and show proof of ownership and insurance in order to get it released." He went on to add that any ATV found operating on any street will be likewise be impounded and the operator and owner will be cited.

Anyone with questions concerning ATV and off road cycles can contact the Police Department Traffic Safety Office at 894-3309 with any inquiries.
